• The Summer of "Jaws"

    jaws.png

http://www.jaws-project.com/ Jaws CMS will be present in the Google Summer of code via a php.net suggestion. Mentored by David Coallier, Nicolas Bérard-Nault will refactor the internals of Jaws, and php.net mentioned in the description : Framework and Content Management System for building dynamic web sites, for PHP 6. I’ll be interested to see the results of such work, and the first open source CMS in my humble knowledge getting ready for the next generation of PHP. From Jaws website :
    http://www.jaws-project.com/index.php?blog/show/35

This is why it is intended in this Google Summer of Code project to revamp the internals of Jaws and migrate it from PHP 4 to PHP 6. This includes, but is not limited to, E_STRICT compliance, the systematic use of real object programming, Unicode character support, the transparent use of different database types and the use of the most current features available in PECL and PEAR, including if needed operator overload and the Standard PHP Library (SPL).

  • Develop the Framework or the CMS

Many CMS projects focus on the Framework development in first place then the CMS itself. This works great for some projects such ezPublish and ezComponents. Others prefer to focus more on the framework, but in the same time offering the CMS product such Seagull PHP Framework. The different approach have its advantages and inconvenient, for example Seagull announced recently the community edition CMS based certainly on its framework and offering robust solution for end-users. The development of a robust framework is one of the keys to create a successful CMS, while most of the content management tasks aims to eliminate coding by web administrators, the framework guarantee the flexibility and the continuation of the project.

I’ll mention here LifeType, a PHP based multi-blogs platform, one of the solutions that I have used and recommended to many professionals such Albawaba http://blogs.albawaba.com/, and that I find its development very interesting not only as a blogging platform but also as a framework and CMS to manage content in a very easy and convivial way.
